Dachau was located on the grounds of an abandoned munitions factory near the northeastern part of the town of Dachau, (USHMM). The town of Dachau houses the electoral castle of the Whittlebach rulers and the river Amper (muenchen). Before the Holocaust, the town of Dachau was a German artists’ colony. Dachau was the first concentration camp, so its organization, its training center for SS officers, and its routines became models for all Nazi concentration camps (USHMM).
